Labels 1 apart, notes side-eye

so i keep this notes doc for label stuff, mostly screenshots and half-formed thoughts, currently sitting at 31 entries. buddy drops two of them in chat around 1am while we're stuck in queue, and they're literally one letter apart.

same numbers on the front, same gray bottle energy, just a different word slapped in front. his read was "bro it's the same thing, they just renamed it," and i wanted to agree but my doc already has three other pairs that looked identical at a glance and then read like completely different products once i zoomed in on the fine print.

not claiming i know which is which. i just know i've burned money before on stuff that turned out to be a copy of a copy with a fresh sticker. so my rule is aggressively boring now: if the paperwork doesn't match line for line, i sit on my hands for a month and see if it's still around.

anyone else hoarding screenshots like this or am i the only one with 31 tabs of unresolved questions

31 entries is serious. Mine’s way messier, but the one thing that saved me was adding columns for sleep, protein, water, and a one-word mood.

Sounds extra, but six months out it’s the only way I can tell whether a weird week was life stress or just my brain being dramatic. For the one-letter-apart labels: I started photographing the cap and front together in the same light, because gray bottles all look identical otherwise.

What’s the actual word that changes? That’d live in my head rent-free too.

I keep a similar doc, and the one-letter variants are exactly why I stopped treating every new label as a new era. Mine now has columns for sleep, protein, water, steps, hunger noise, and mood—label trivia got demoted to a note at the bottom.

At 31 entries the useful pattern is usually how the weeks feel, not what word is on the front. Sharp question: are you logging anything about how you actually felt on each, or is it just screenshots?

That's the only column I still read now that I'm in maintenance.

Do the two labels list the same NDC? That’s the first thing I’d compare, since the front numbers can match while the actual registration/filler differs.

I’ve started snapping the lot + expiration and the distributor line, then checking the NDC if it’s there. If those one-letter variants share an NDC, that’s a big side-eye; if not, it’s probably just similar branding.

Are the lot numbers close together or from totally different dates?

i feel this. my notes doc got less useless once i started pasting the back-panel “distributed by” line + cap color next to each screenshot.

two bottles looked identical from the front, but one had a different city on the back, which explained why 1am me kept grabbing the wrong one. do yours have different manufacturer/distributor addresses on the back?

that’s the tell i’d check before trusting the one-letter word.

Quick thing I’d add to the doc: photograph and scan the barcode/GTIN. If the “one letter” variant resolves to a different package size or product family, that’s a cleaner tell than the front label.

I also log lot-number format and placement—same numbers up front can hide very different back-panel print runs. Do yours both scan to the same code, or does that differ too?

The tell for me is the legal-status line, not the front: “Rx only” vs “dietary supplement” vs “compounded” is a category change even when the numbers match. I log lot/expiry and the exact label category in a column, then flag any pair where only the descriptor differs—that’s usually repackaging, not equivalence.

Sharp question: does either one carry an “Rx only” or “not for resale” line? That’s where these one-letter twins tend to split.
