Found a sealed ret vial in my medicine bin

I was digging for allergy tablets and found a sealed ret vial from early spring. My small-town pharmacy says they can't take back dispensed meds, and my insurance won't help with a replacement until my next refill window.

A chunk of me wants to keep it because it cost real money and tok forever to sort out; the other chunk says if I'm not sure how it sat all summer, it's just clutter with a scary label. Not asking for dosing advice at all.

How do you all decide what to pitch vs keep? Do you trust the date on the label, your gut, or your fridge thermometer?

I run a cafe, so I’m weirdly obsessive about FIFO and temp swings. My first question would be: was that vial in a cool dark closet with the allergy tabs, or a steamy bathroom/kitchen drawer?

That would decide it for me way more than the receipt price. I’ve eaten the cost on expired stock before—it stings, but uncertainty messes with my head worse.

If you keep it, slap tape on it with “found [date]” and set a phone reminder for your refill window so you’re not searching again. Also, a cheap lockbox for meds + a separate “needs checking” bin saved me from bakery-cabinet chaos.

Portion-control brain and business-brain fight daily, I get it.

Been there. I found a sealed one from a trip last fall and now I keep a phone note: date it went in the bin, where it lived (cool closet vs. travel bag), and a photo of the label.

That way I’m not relying on memory months later. Sharp follow-up: was yours in the original box with the date, or loose?

That’s the detail I’d be trying to reconstruct. There was a thread here a while back about the “medicine bin tax”—sometimes the peace of mind is the real refill. What’s your storage story?

Oh man, the med bin black hole is real. I found a sealed something-or-other from last fall in mine, and our little pharmacy gave me the same shrug.

What helped me was starting a note on my phone: date I picked it up, date on the box, and a photo of the label. Makes it less of a mystery later.

Does yours have a beyond-use or expiration date you can still read? That’d probably decide it for me.

If it’s fuzzy or past, I’d personally rather be out the money than keep second-guessing every time I open that bin.

Sunk cost is real, but sealed only means the stopper wasn’t punctured—it doesn’t tell you much about temp. My med bin lives in a hallway closet, and I keep a cheap thermometer/hygrometer in there because our

late hours gamer here, i track dumb stuff like soda swaps in a spreadsheet, so i’d make a note for the vial: date found, where it lived, and any temp swings (bathroom cabinet in summer, power outage, left in car). sealed since spring is one thing, but storage spot would matter to me.

was yours in a col dark bin or somewhere that gets hot/humid? also, does your pharmacy do a take-back event?

mine only does those twice-a-year drop-off days and won’t take dispensed stuff otherwise.
