Protein floor is fixed; my calorie ceiling floats

Current setup: protein target at 1.6 g/kg, roughly 145 g/day, and calories allowed to drift between 1,700 and 2,000 depending on appetite. I log weekly averages instead of daily totals because the day-to-day signal is noisy — a 1,200 kcal day followed by a 2,300 kcal day tells me nothing useful, and chasing the daily number made me irritable for no return.

Protein is the recurring problem, not calories. Suppression makes 1,400 kcal easy to hit by accident, but that leaves me 40–50 g short unless I front-load: 40 g at breakfast, another 40 g before mid-afternoon.

Fiber and sodium are the only other two I track, mainly because low weeks made me feel flat before the scale acknowledged anything.

Genuine question for the group: do you anchor protein and let calories float, or anchor calories and treat protein as the remainder? I've only tested the first approach and want to know if the second changes adherence.

I’m in maintenance too and landed on the same weekly-average approach. One thing that helped me: I cap the week instead of the day.

Protein floor 145g, and I aim for a 12,500–13,500 weekly calorie band, so a 2,300 day just means a couple of 1,700–1,800 days later. I also track a 10-day weight median plus monthly waist, because weekly scale averages can get noisy from sodium or travel.

Curious: how do you decide when a higher-calorie week is just life vs. a trend worth tightening? That’s the part I still tweak.
