I’m 56 and our youngest left for college two years ago. For a long time I rattled around the kitchen making the same huge casseroles out of habit.
Since March I’ve been walking 30 minutes after breakfast, usually 6 days a week, and I’ve taught myself to cook smaller, brighter meals—sheet-pan salmon with lemon, lentil soup in the pressure cooker, chopped salads I actually look forward to. The scale is down 61 pounds in 10 months, and I’ve gone from a 22 to a 14.
What surprises me most is that the walks aren’t punishment anymore; they’re when I listen to podcasts and notice the seasons. Still working on evenings, though. That’s when the old snacky restlessness shows up. Anyone else find the empty-house quiet makes dinner time weird? How do you handle it?
