The version of me I expected still isn't here

I’m nine months in, forty-one pounds down, lifting twice a week, eating protein at breakfast, and my labs look better. So why do I still feel like I’m waiting to “come back”? Not just appearance — energy, interest in things, feeling like my personality isn’t rented.

I keep seeing claims that some peptide or supplement fixes the flatness, but when I search I mostly find anecdotes and podcast certainty, not solid human data. For those farther out: what actually changed for you, and was it time, sleep, strength, therapy, or something measurable?

I’m not looking for a protocol, just trying to separate normal adjustment from hype. If you tracked anything beyond weight, what was useful?

Honest systems question: what’s your current deficit and recovery load? Nine months at 41 lb down, lifting twice a week, protein breakfast — that’s a lot of input changes.

I tracked mood, sleep, and resting HR for a month, and the flatness lined up almost perfectly with weeks I was still pushing a deficit plus training. Not a peptide-shaped hole; more like an under-recovery alarm.

If labs look good but the vibe is rented, I’d want to see what a deliberate maintenance stretch does before adding another variable.

What does your sleep and resting HR look like on rest days vs lift days?

I lift 4x/week and have been through the flat, rented-personality phase. For me it tracked with deficit duration and cardio load, not some missing peptide.

I did a month at maintenance calories, kept protein high, slept 7–8, and added one extra lifting day; mood and interest came back before the mirror changed much. I tracked mood 1–10 and session energy, and the pattern was stupidly obvious.

Sharp question: have you had a real maintenance phase since the 41 lbs came off, or are you still white-knuckling a deficit? That’s the first thing I’d audit.

Nine months and 41 lbs is a long time to stay in a deficit. I track everything — weight, waist, lifts, sleep, protein, even refill shipping times — and the only thing that ever explained my flatness was seep debt plus too many high-effort weeks stacked up.

A maintenance-ish week and 10 min daylight before breakfast moved my 1–10 “interest in stuff” score more than any peptide I price-compared. Not saying it’s universal, just my n=1. Have you logged mood/energy daily for the last 8 weeks? That’s the spreadsheet I’d start before adding anything else.

Hi, brand new here (week one, nervous). Your post is basically my fear.

I don’t have answers, but one thing I noticed in a past long fitness push: I’d made every part of my day instrumental—steps, protein, lifts—and then felt hollow because nothing was just for me. Do you have anything on the calendar that has zero numbers attached?

A dumb hobby, a friend you see without talking about goals, a show you binge without guilt? When I was flat, adding one non-optimized hour a week helped mre than any tracker insight.

Is that missing for you, or is it more like the old things just don’t spark anymore?

I’m 11 months in and the flatness hit me around 9 too. What helped was treating “interest” like a snack drawer: I made a stupid list on the fridge — 5-min walk, podcast while folding, 10 min alone with tea, text one friend — and grabbed one when I noticed the blah.

I also started jotting mood 1–5 at dinner next to my protein, not calories. My flat days were mostly days I never left the house or talked to another adult.

Not magic, but it gave me data. Are you tracking anything besides weight and labs?
