Two kids, a snack drawer, and my dumbest mealtime mistake

Two kids, swim practice, and a snack drawer. That was my whole system. Appetite went quiet early on, so I stopped making myself a plate at dinner.

I'd stand at the counter, eat a few crackers and a cheese stick, call it done, then crash into bedtime routines. By day 12 I was shaky and weirdly emotional by 7pm. Not a dramatic emergency, just me realizing I'd eaten like a toddler who isn't hungry.

Now I keep yogurt cups and boiled eggs where I see them, and I sit down for ten minutes even if it's just cereal. Snacks are backup, not the meal. Anyone else have to relearn that the hard way?

The counter dinner is such a trap. I did the same thing—except mine was handfuls of cereal while packing lunches.

What finally worked for me was a “fourth kid plate”: at 5:15, before the evening circus, I put a real plate on the table—protein, a starch, whatever veg—and ate it sitting down for eight whole minutes, even if my kids were having something else. I also keep two grab-and-go bowls in the fridge (rotisserie chicken + rice + frozen veg) for nights I miss that window.

Not fancy, but it stopped the 7pm shaky/weepy crash. Curious: is it the sitting-down part that feels impossible, or the making-a-plate part?

The 7pm shaky/weepy thing is so familiar. For me, the gap was earlier than dinner: my last real food was often 11:30, then I’d “save” myself for the family meal and end up too empty to cook.

I started a tiny 3pm bridge—leftover chicken or yogurt and fruit—and tracked my 7pm mood for a week in my notes. Swim nights were always worse, which told me I needed tht bridge earlier on busy days.

Have you noticed whether it hits

Been there with the counter dinner. The snack drawer isn’t the problem; not having a landing pad for your own food is. What helped me: at lunch I make a “future me” plate—protein + frozen veg, covered in the fridge.

At 6 I microwave it while the kids eat. Even if I only eat half, I sit down. I’m a daily weigher, but I watch the 7-day trend, and it got less noisy once my sleep stopped being trash.

Also, are you getting any real protein before 5pm? When my appetite went quiet I’d realize I’d had coffee and a cheese stick all day, then wondered why 7pm felt like a cliff.
