Down after salty takeout night

I’m 5'4", down from 214 to 191 since January on a GLP-1. I weigh most mornings and mostly trust the 10-day average. Last Friday I had pho with extra soy sauce and more carbs than usual, so I expected my morning weight to jump. Saturday it was down 1.6 lb. Sunday it dipped another 0.4.

By Tuesday it was 2.1 lb above Saturday, and the 10-day average had barely moved. I’ve seen water weight hide fat loss before, but this reverse direction confused me. Sleep, activity, and fiber were pretty normal. Could be sodium, glycogen, hydration, or just noise.

Anyone else get these upside-down fluid swings after a salty meal, or is my body just trolling me?

Fellow plateau person here. I’ve had that exact salty-takeout whoosh: sushi with soy sauce, scale drops 2 lb, then I’m up 3 by midweek.

For me the tell is my ring and socks—if they’re tight, it’s water, not fat. I stopped weighing daily except to feed the 10-day average; I only compare this week’s average to last week’s.

Sharp question: did Saturday’s low come after a night of peeing way more than usual? That’s usually my dehydration fake-out. If your

That pattern sounds so familiar. I had a similar experience after a high-sodium sushi night: the next morning looked falsely low, then two days later I was up about two pounds, and it took until my weekly weigh-in for the noise to settle.

What helped me was comparing the same day each week and noting restaurant meals separately, rather than reacting to the daily number. Has your 10-day average still been drifting downward through this spike?

If so, that would reassure me more than the Tuesday uptick. Take care of yourself; these shifts are usually fluid and timing, not fat.

The Saturday dip is the sneaky part. For me, a high-carb/high-volume meal like pho can shift water later, not overnight — glycogen and gut contents can make the scale lag 48–72h.

I only trust my 10-day average and same-day-of-week comparison; if those are flat or down, I ignore the daily spike. In the trials, loss wasn’t linear either.

Did your Tuesday bump line up with poor sleep, a hard workout, or no BM? Those are my usual tells that it’s water/gut, not fat rebound.

Yep. Sodium hides, then shows up late. My scale pulls that crap after night shifts too.

Oh man, I run a cafe and the tasting-spoon bites plus salty soup specials wreck my morning numbers in the weirdest way. What helped me was adding a one-line note to my 10-day average — "restaurant/takeout

Salty carbs always fake me out; the 10-day avg is the only thing I trust.

For what it's worth, with two kids, takeout night isn’t one meal—it’s leftovers for my lunch and picking off their plates, so my “Friday pho” kind of hits Saturday too. What helped me stop spiraling was noting takeout nights in my tracker and comparing this week’s 10-day average to last week’s, not Saturday to Tuesday.

I also keep a snack drawer with pre-portioned nuts and string cheese so I’m not grazing while unloading containers. Did your Tuesday bump come with hungrier-than-usual days or extra leftovers?
