Refill math: sticker price vs what actually leaves my account

I keep a boring note in my phone for compounded GLP-1 refills: date, amount charged, shipping days, stock status, and any fee that wasn’t in the ad. Over the last four refills my monthly number bounced from $185 to $268, mostly because one month had a $35 membership I forgot was recurring and another had a $24 shipping charge plus a 10-day stock delay.

The advertised price is almost never the landed price.

I don’t care about brand loyalty here; I care about total per 28 days after membership, shipping, taxes, and whether I have to reorder early because shipping slipped. I also started marking how many days a shipment actually covered, because a cheaper bottle that arrives late isn’t cheaper.

For folks who have done this longer: what line itms do you track before calling something the lowest monthly cost?

Your note is more organized than mine. I added a column for “surprise fees” and a second one for grocery spend that week—weirdly, the months my refill total spiked were also months I was too rushed to cook, so takeout made the real cost worse.

Now I check my note on Sunday walks and pre-plan two dinners before I reorder. One thing I didn’t track until recently: membership renewal dates. Mine hits quarterly and never lines up with refill month. Does your note include renewal dates, or just charges after they post? That’s the piece that keeps catching me.

Yep. The recurring membership is the silent budget assassin.

Tbh i do a similar note but add one column: days of coverage per refill (order date to next order date, not shipping date). Then I calculate total charged ÷ days covered, so a $268 month with 40 days between orders can actually be cheaper per day than a $185 month with 25 days.

The membership fee only looks scary until I amortize it across those days. Also flag stock delays separately from shipping—if a 10-day delay means I reorder sooner next time, that's a hidden cost. Do you track reorder date or just charge date? That's the number that smoothed my panic.

My refill math lives in a hotel note app and still gets ambushed by surprise shipping fees lol

For what it's worth, i do a similar note but added two columns: cost per day, and “chaos tax” — the extra I spend on easy proteins/snacks when a refill runs late or I’m too wiped to cook. Last month that was $31 in yogurt drinks and rotisserie chicken, which made the real number way uglier than the sticker.

Sharp question: do you log cost per day or just per month? My monthly looks fine until I divide by actual days it lasted.

With two kids, I also set a phone reminder 3 days before any recurring fee hits, because otherwise I’ll absolutely forget.

I do a similar note, but the line that changed everything was “true cost per week I actually stayed consistent.” One refill looked fine at $210, but divided by the three weeks I tracked food/water/movement, it was way higher than my brain wanted. I also screenshot the checkout total before paying and set a phone reminder 48 hours before any recurring fee.

Caught an $18 auto-charge I’d forgotten. Not preaching—I’ve regained before and the money shame is real.

Do you log fees as separate lines or roll them into one “what actually left my account” number? I’m trying to decide which keeps me honest without spiraling.

Oof, the forgotten recurring fee is such a jump scare—I do this with cafe supply orders 😅

Honestly, ugh, the recurring membership sneak attack is so real. My spreadsheet has trust issues now.

I do a similar note but add a “days between charges” column. Last three: $212 over 30 days = $7.07/day; $268 over 38 days = $7.05/day, so the sticker jump looked worse until I spread it over coverage.

The recurring fee and shipping are what wreck the monthly number. Sharp question: are you logging ship date or delivery date?

My 10-day stock delay was really 12 days door-to-door, which made the next refill feel early. I also calendar the membership 3 days before it hits and screenshot the checkout total.

Not glamorous, but it stopped surprise fees.

My note has an all-in per-day column; recurring fees keep me humble.

I do a similar note but added a “landed cost per 30 days” column: (charge + membership + shipping − any credit) ÷ days the supply actually covers. It makes the $35 month look less like a one-off and more like a real +$8.75/wk hit if I only got 28 days.

I also log order-to-door days, and if it’s over 7, I move my next reorder trigger up by that many days so I’m not scrambling. Curious: are you spreading that membership across refills or dumping it into the month it hits?

That choice changes your “true monthly” a lot.

oh man the 2am checkout gremlin got me last time. i was between ranked queues and apparently fat-fingered a $12 “rush” add-on i didn’t need. my last three totals: $198, $241, $205.

the $241 one also sat pending for 3 days then settled lower, which messed up my note. now i screenshot the pending amount and the final posted amount side by side.

also started a tiny soda-swap jar: every time i skip a gas station soda i move $2.50 there, and it covers the random fees so the monthly number stings less.

does anyone else have pending charges that change after a few days? or is that just my bank being weird?

recurring fee ambsh got me too, now i check my bank like it's a boss fight

We had a whole thread on sneaky memberships last year; my note still has an “oops” column lol.

I track a slightly different column: cost per day of supply, not per 30 days. Sounds nitpicky, but my own four-refill trendline says the stock-delay month wasn’t the expensive one—it was when shipping stretched to 9 days and I reordered 6 days early.

That early reorder quietly added ~$14/day-of-coverage. I also flag whether the “discount” hits before or after tax, since mine is after tax and the recurring bit makes it worse. Sharp

the oops column is my entire spreadsheet now, i just add a new row and cry

Sorry to hijack — does anyone else keep a separate grocery/protein note now that cooking is more deliberate? Loop back: I added a “days between charges” column to my refill note, because my per-charge math looked fine until a stock delay shoved two refills into one month.

Now I reconcile the bank alert same night and flag any fee that shows up after checkout, not just the advertised number. It’s boring, but it stopped the monthly number from feeling like a surprise.

Yep, sticker price is fiction—my note has
