Stuck 19 days after 28 lb loss - whoosh or tracking drift?

Down 28 lb over 16 weeks (SW 214, CW 186, 5 ft 6). I weigh daily and use a 7-day average. For the last 19 days my average hasn't budged more than 0.4 lb. Same calories (1,750-1,850), protein ~130g, steps 8-10k. Added 3 strength sessions/week 4 weeks ago. Labs last month: A1c 5.4, fasting glucose 92, TSH 1.8.

Is this classic water retention from new lifting, or am I undercounting? What data would you track to tell the difference?

New lifting can hold 2-4 lb of water for weeks. Are your clothes fitting differently? I'd trust waist and photos over the scale for now.

Waist measurements matter more than scale. I stalled 3 weeks after adding squats, then dropped 2 lb in two days. Annoying but normal.

Did sodium or step count change? My 7-day average hid a 3-day binge after a wedding. Logging weekends honestly found ~250 cal/day.

The 1,750-1,850 range is wide. Are you weighing food or eyeballing? I had to weigh oils and bites to find my stall.

My labs were similar when I stalled. Lifting water was my issue. Give it another 2 weeks.

What's your weekly average slope over 3 weeks? Daily weights are noise. If slope is flat, intake is likely the issue.

Flat slope doesn't always mean intake. I was in a 500 deficit and stalled 3 weeks on keto. Water and cortisol. I'd still audit food first.

I'd audit food first too, not because you're lying, but portions drift. Weighing for 5 days usually solves this puzzle.

I've been exactly here. Lost 31 lb, then stalled 22 days after starting a 3x/week dumbbell program.

I was ready to cut calories further, but I measured my waist, thighs, and upper arm instead. Waist dropped 1.25 inches while scale stayed 184-185.

The whoosh came on day 26: 3.5 lb down in four mornings. What helped was not panicking and keeping protein high.

I also took a rest week due to travel, and the drop happened then. For you, I'd keep the lifting, hold intake steady another 10-14 days, and compare weekly averages plus tape measurements.

Rest week whoosh is real for me too.

Any chance weekends are the leak? Two glasses of wine and restaurant meals added up to my 19-day stall. Weighing Sundays helped.

19 days flat right after adding 3x/week lifting screams water/glycogen to me—my first month under the bar I held 4-5 lb of inflammation fluid and my 7-day average didn’t drop for 23 days, then dumped 3.8 lb in 6 days. Are your lifs still getting stronger? If yes, don’t cut yet.

I’d add a waist measurement at the same spot and compare weekly, not daily.

Also check your scale’s on tile, not carpet—mine was off 2 lb for a week.

Tracking drift got me around week 15: I was logging 1,800 but not the olive oil, two kid leftover bites, and the creamer. Weighed oils for 6 days and found ~230 hidden cals/day, which is basically my deficit.

Weird part: my weight didn’t drop during that test, but my 7-day average finally cracked 0.6 lb 10 days later. So I’d audit portions before slashing calories.

Sleep is my sleeper variable—under 6 hours for a week and my average freezes.

I’d add a tape measure before changing anything.

I stalled for 21 days around 30 lb down, but my waist at the navel went from 35.5 to 34.25 inches and my jeans went from snug to needing a belt. The scale was flat while my body was clearly changing. Are your cloths fitting differently? If yes, that’s a strong sign it’s not true fat-loss stall.

New lifting can absolutely mask fat loss for 4-6 weeks.

I added 3x/week full body around week 18 and my 7-day average sat at 191.6 for 25 days, then dropped to 187.4 in eight days. The tell was my quads and shoulders looked fuller, not softer. How heavy are your lifts now compared to four weeks ago? If your weights are climbing, I’d hold steady another 2 weeks.

I’d look at sodium and carb load, not just calories. Two high-sodium dinners can add 3-5 lb water that lingers 5-7 days for me.

I tested it: same 1,800 calories, sushi with soy sauce versus a home chicken rice bowl, and my morning weght moved 2.6 lb. What did your last 5 days look like compared with the first week of the stall?

Hot take: don’t drop calories yet. After 28 lb, a 2-3 week flat stretch is common while your body catches up.

I cut from 1,800 to 1,600 at week 16 and just got hungrier, worse workouts, and the same scale number for another 10 days. What are your weekly average steps doing? If they’ve drifted down from 9k to 7k, that’s your missing 150-200 calories.
