Signed up for a beginner kayak class this Saturday

Small-town update: our pharmacy tech waved me down yesterday because my insurance pushed through another 90-day approval, and I did a little happy dance by the vitamin aisle. I'm 38, down 27 pounds since February, with about 40 I'd still like to lose.

But the part that has me emotional is I signed up for a beginner kayak class at the county lake this Saturday. Last summer I would've skipped it because I was scared of tipping and not being able to haul myself back into the boat.

I'm not at goal and my knees still complain, but I'm actually making plans that aren't just about food or the scale. Anyone else find the mental shift shows up before the mirror does?

Night shifter here. Kayak class is a good call. Bring a dry bag and wear shoes that won't float off if you dump.

My first class was sit-in, I death-gripped the paddle, and my forearms were toast. Ask if it's sit-in or sit-on-top.

That changes how wet you get and how you climb back in. Also, don't book it right after a shift unless you can nap first.

Falling asleep in a kayak is not the flex.

Kayaking is sneaky—lots of lat and core work, very little lower-body, so my step counter looked insulting after my first class. What helped me: set a timer on my watch for every 20 min to check posture and sip water, because I clench my jaw and death-grip the paddle when I'm focused.

In the trials, novel exercise can blunt appetite for some people, but I wouldn't count on it—I packed a protein bar anyway. Are you doing a sit-on-top or sit-in?

That changes how much your back talks to you afterward.
