My craving clock moved to after-school pickup

Two kids, dinner prep, and the after-school chaos are my real craving window. I’m 14 weeks in and the old 9 p.m.

pantry raid is mostly gone, but around 4 p.m. I still want something crunchy while I’m unpacking backpacks and answering four questions at once.

My snack bin has pre-portioned bags: saltines, turkey sticks, grapes, and a couple dark chocolate squares. I try to sit down with one instead of grazing standing at the counter. It doesn’t feel dramatic.

The craving shows up, I notice it, I pick something, then I move on. Some days I eat the whole bag of pretzels and that’s just Tuesday.

Anyone else find their cravings have a time stamp instead of a volume knob?

Tbh i hear you—the after-school window is its own kind of hunger. What helped me was moving the snack earlier, around 3:40 before pickup, so I was not trying to crunch and answer questions at the same time.

Then at home I kept a five-minute reset: water, bathroom, then one crunchy thing on a plate while backpacks got unpacked. I track weekly averages rather than daily totals, and that planned pause kept things steadier than white-knuckling it.

Have you noticed whether the 4 p.m. urge builds during the car line or only once you are inside the house?

That might tell you whether it is hunger, habit, or just the chaos.

Your snack bin is downstream of the actual trigger. I’d test moving the crunchy thing upstream — to the pickup line, before the backpacks become a triage desk.

I keep frozen edamame or cucumber spears in the car console; by the time I hit the kitchen, the 4 p.m. urge has already been honored and doesn’t need a pantry encore.

Sharp question: is it hunger, or is it oral/sensory input while you’re being interrupted every 11 seconds? If it’s the latter, no pre-portioned bag will fix it, because the bag isn’t the bottleneck — the transition is.
