My pH strip habit before mixing feels either careful or compulsive

Not trying to tell anyone what to do here — just genuinely curious if I'm the only one. I keep a little sleeve of narrow-range strips in the same drawer as my coffee filters, and for the last six refills I've dipped one before I mix anything.

Two of those came back lower than I expected, so I set that bottle aside and opened a fresh one instead. Nothing dramatic happened, but it made me notice how much of my routine runs on "it's probably fine." I'm not a lab person, I don't own a meter, and I'm not pretending a strip is real testing.

It's more that I already track resting heart rate, sleep, and morning hunger, and this feels like the same instinct pointed at supplies instead of symptoms. Does anyone else do a small check like this, or am I just adding a step that feeds my worry?

I’ve been that person with aquarium strips, so no judgment. One concrete thing that helped me: I started writing lot number + date opened on the strip sleeve, because two weird readings turned out to be from a sleeve that had been open in a humid bathroom drawer for months.

I also tested the same liquid with two different lots once and got about half a pH unit apart — mde me trust the trend way less. Are you checking the diluent alone or after mixing?

Matrix/interference can matter, and I’d be curious what you’re actually trying to rule out. In the trials I’ve read, home strip data is pretty noisy.
