My dorm protein rotation costs less than one campus latte

Broke student check-in: I’m down 52 lbs since February, and the biggest change isn’t gym stuff — it’s that my mini fridge now looks like a sad little dairy and legume museum. Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, tuna packets, boiled eggs from the dining hall, and a bag of red lentils I cook in a $12 rice cooker.

I’ve eaten so much yogurt that my taste buds have started negotiating for a new roommate. Appetite is low most days, so I mostly eat tiny weird plates: lentils with salsa, cottage cheese with everything bagel seasoning, tuna mixed with mustard and pickles.

Not glamorous, but cheap and it keeps me from living on vending machine crackers. The scale finally moved after a month of me acting like canned beans were a personality.

What’s your cheapest no-cook or dorm-friendly protein that doesn’t taste like punishment?

Not sure if it’s the same for you, but my yogurt burnout was a sweetness problem, not a yogurt problem. I switched half my containers to savory: plain Greek yogurt + lemon + za’atar + diced cucumber, or stirred into warm red lentils with frozen spinach.

Weirdly good, and it stretched the lentils so I wasn’t eating plain mush by Thursday. I also started tracking cost per 30g protein out of curiosity — boiled dining-hall eggs and lentil+yogurt bowls were stupid cheap; tuna packets were the outlier.

In the trials, protein at breakfast tends to help with later hunger, but I can’t say it’s magic. How are you seasoning the lentils? Mine only got edible once I added acid and something crunchy.

Tbh hi, total newbie here — week one and still figuring out how to not be starving at 10pm. Your lentil rice cooker thing is genius. One cheap thing I’ve been doing: frozen edamame with a little kimchi or hot sauce. Keeps forever and feels less like sad dairy.

Do you batch-cook the lentils plain and then change them up with salsa or curry powder? I’m nervous I’ll get bored by day four. Also, congrats on 52 lbs, that’s seriously amazing.

The dairy/legume museum is real. One cheap add that saved my rotation: frozen edamame—$2 bag, ~9g protein per half cup, 3 min in the microwave.

Also, what water ratio do you use for red lentils in the rice cooker? Mine goes from soup to wallpaper paste with no middle ground.

And have you tracked sodium at all? Tuna packets + cottage cheese were my sneaky high-sodium combo; I still eat them, just noticed it when I logged for a week.

Curious if the 52 lb felt more like the protein volume or just the overall deficit math.

Nice work. The $12 rice cooker lentil thing is smart, but I’d check your actual protein number — 1 cup cooked red lentils is ~18g, which is solid, but it’s a lot of volume.

My dorm hack was frozen shelled edamame: USDA lists it around 11g protein per 100g, microwaves in 3 min, and I’d toss it with tuna or cottage cheese when yogurt fatigue hit. Also, savory Greek yogurt (plain + salsa + chili powder) tastes like a totally different food.

Are you tracking daily protein or just weekly grocery spend? Curious whether the 52 lbs came with a protein target or mostly appetite changes.
