Closing shift leftovers are my real portion test

I run a small breakfast-and-lunch spot. At close there's usually a quart of soup, two muffins, and a half pan of roasted vegetables that can't be sold tomorrow.

My old habit was to take it home so it didn't waste, then graze while I closed the register. Since starting a GLP-1 in March, my dinner appetite is quieter, but the free-food guilt is loud.

Last night I packed only the vegetables, left the muffins, and still thought about them on the drive home. Do you have a closing-time rule that keeps this from becoming a whole debate every night? Not askig medical stuff, just the mental script.

I’d separate the two decisions: what happens to the food, and what happens to my appetite. A trick that helped me in a café was a close-out box with a sticky note: “this is tomorrow’s lunch, not tonight’s snack.” Soup + roasted veg go in; muffins stay in the display case for staff/whatever your rule is.

Then I log the box as a planned meal if I eat it, not as “free.” In the trials, protein/fiber-heavy stuff tends to be more satiating, but the guilt part isn’t really appetite

Hi, I’m brand new here and only a week in, so mostly lurking. This hit home. I don’t run a restaurant, but I close at a bakery and the “it’s going in the bin” guilt is real.

What’s helped me so far is boxing leftovers for a coworker or freezing them before I start cash-out, so they’re not sitting next to me while I’m tired. I also jot “free-food” versus “actually hungry” in my notes app.

Is your hardest moment the register time or the walk home? Sorry if that’s nosy!

I had the same trigger. Now I do a 5-minute close-out before I touch the register: soup into 2-cup deli containers, roasted veg into 1-cup portions, muffins halved and frozen.

I tape date + rough calories/cost per portion on each. I track cost per portion like I track grocery prices, so I know a quart of soup is ~4 servings, not one “dinner.” Then I only bring home one container that fits my plan; the rest goes to the closing crew or compost.

Sharp question: do you decide what to take before you pack, or after you see what’s left? If I decide after, I always take too much.
