Day 4, dessert still calls me

Hi everyone, I hope it's alright to post something this small. I started four days ago and I'm still learning what's normal. I think I expected the food thoughts to just switch off, but last night after dinner I opened the cupboard without even thinking — I wasn't hungry, my hand just knew the routine.

I closed it again, which felt good, but the wanting was still humming in the background. I'm 41 and dessert has been my little reward at the end of the day for years, so maybe this is habit more than hunger.

Does that pull loosen up over the first month, or is it more about learning to sit with it? Not expecting miracles, just curious how it went for others early on. Thanks for having me — reading here has already helped a lot.

the cupboard autopilot is so real. What helped me was changing the routine around the urge instead of white-knuckling it—after dinner I make a mug of hot tea and sit somewhere I don’t usually snack.

First week I still drifted to the cupboard twice, but the tea gave my hands a job. I also started tracking the urge, not just food: time, trigger, hungry vs. not.

After two weeks I saw most of mine were 8–10pm boredom/scrolling, not actual hunger. I’m on a long plateau too, so no magic, but that pattern kept me from spiraling.

Is your dessert pull more right after dinner, or later when you’re tired?

Four days is so early — that cupboard reach is pure habit, not hunger. I’m maintaining now, and what helped me was changing the sequence rather than fighting the craving.

For a few weeks I’d brush my teeth right after dinner and leave a glass of water where my hand used to go. It felt stupid, but it broke the autopilot. Sharp question: is it the taste you miss, or the little full-stop to the day?

If it’s the full-stop, a decaf tea or a 5-minute crossword might scratch the same itch. You

Night shft here. The cupboard at 2am is muscle memory, not hunger.

I keep dessert out of sight and have a boring backup ready: tea, gum, cut fruit. If I still want the real thing, I plate it and sit down. Half the time I don't. Four days is early.

The hand reaching is the habit, not you failing. Closing it is the win. My worst window is right after I wake up before a shift. What's yours? Track that, not the dessert.

Tbh four days is so early — and that cupboard moment doesn’t mean you failed. I’m an empty-nester too, and my hardest habit was the 8pm TV-and-something-sweet ritual, not real hunger.

I started jotting down just the time I got the urge, not calories, and it was almost always within 20 minutes of clearing dishes. Now I make a mug of cinnamon tea and walk to the mailbox, or knit for ten minutes.

Sounds silly, but the hands need a new job. Have you noticed if your cupboard pull happens at a certain time, or after a certain kind of dinner?

That clue might help you swap the routine instead of white-knuckling it.
