My Flavor Log Says Condiments Are Falling Apart

I started a 1–5 flavor column in my food spreadsheet on day 94, mostly to separate "I don't want it" from "I don't like it anymore." Condiments are getting wrecked. Hot sauce used to be a reliable 5; last three meals it's a 2.

Pickles now read as pure salt. Coffee is the weird one: still like the ritual, but the actual sip is flat and slightly metallic.

Meanwhile vanilla protein shake stays a 4, and eggs slid from 4 to 2.5. My appetite trendline is down, sure, but the flavor trendline moved before the hunger one did. I'm not looking for a workaround, just curious how common this is.

If you track anything, did specific categories shift for you, or is it more random day to day?

Noticed similar pattern around month 3: acid+salt condiments collapsed first. What helped my log was splitting your 1–5 into two scores: flavor amplitude and reward.

Hot sauce went 5→2 amplitude, but reward stayed 3 for the heat sensation. Pickles: brine was a salt bomb, crunch/texture stayed 4, so I used them as a texture vehicle. Coffee: ritual 5, sip 2.

I now track smell separately—fresh ground beans still register, brewed taste often doesn’t. Are you logging temperature? Cold/room-temp condiments seem blunter for me.

Are you rating the first bite or the third? I split mine into “first bite” and “after 3 bites” because hot sauce kept scoring high, then tanking.

Pickles: I rinse the brine off and squeeze lime on them, gets me a 3.5 instead of straight salt-wall. Coffee is ritual-only for me now — if the sip is flat, I make hot water with a cinnamon stick and call it done.

With two kids, I’m not rebuilding breakfast. Is yours worse at a certain time of day?

Mine falls apart around 4pm snack-drawer o’clock.

Try logging condiments by function instead of flavor: acid, heat, salt, crunch. My hot sauce dropped too, but it turned out I still liked the vinegar hit on eggs and hated it on anything fatty.

Pickles went from snack to salt-delivery system, so now they’re just a texture/salt move on sandwiches. Coffee: I track ritual score and sip score separately.

Both 5/5 and 2/5 is actually useful — tells you whether to change the bean or just keep the mug. Is your hot sauce 2/5 consistent across bland vs rich bases?

I feel you on coffee. For me it wasn’t the beans, it was the temp — I was drinking it lukewarm by the time I got to it.

Started using a smaller mug and it’s less flat. Also, have you tried rating texture separately fom taste?

Pickles went from 4 to 2 for me on salt, but the crunch is still a solid 5. Splitting the columns weirdly made me less mad at them.

What’s your 1–5 on mouthfeel alone?

One thing I’d isolate: is it the condiment or the carrier? My sriracha fell from 5 to 2 on eggs, but the same bottle was still a solid 4 on plain rice.

I started doing a tiny “neutral carrier” check every couple weeks—dab on rice or cottage cheese—and it split “taste actually changed” from “I’m bored of it on that meal.” Coffee was similar: hot black read metallic/flat, but iced or room temp was less awful. Have you tried the same hot sauce/pickle on a bland base vs your usual meal?

Also, same brands/bottle ages? My open vinegar stuff seemed to dull after a month in the fridge.
