The after-dinner quiet stopped feeling like a trick

Last night I made a pot of white bean and kale soup, enough for two dinners, and afterward I did the dishes without mentally inventorying the pantry. That sounds small, but it’s new.

We became empty nesters in the spring, and I’ve been walking a 22-minute loop around the neighborhood after dinner most nights. At first I was doing it to stay out of the kitchen.

Lately I’m doing it because I like the air and the podcast. The strange part is the quiet at home afterward.

I used to need something sweet or salty to signal the day was over. Now the signal is just the walk, then tea, then bed.

I keep waiting to feel cheated or restless, and I mostly don’t. Is this just a routine that clicked, or did your appetite cues shift like this too?

i do a similar after-dinner loop and the thing that made it stick was a soda-swap ritual: lime sparkling water in the first five minutes, then i leave the can on the porch rail so my hands aren’t looking for a snack when i get back. weirdly helps.

do you think the two-dinner pot made the quiet feel earned, or is the 22-min loop itself starting to become the new normal?
