The "so how long will you stay on it" question is wearing me out

A coworker asked me this at a team lunch Thursday, mid-bite, right in front of everyone. She wasn't trying to be unkind, but the table got quiet and suddenly I felt like I owed a book report on my own body. I said it was between me and my doctor, then asked about her garden. That worked, mostly.

What I didn't say: I'm down 31 pounds since January, I've gotten my after-dinner walks up to four nights a week, and my morning protein shake is probably the most consistent habit I've ever built. That's the stuff I'd actually enjoy talking about.

I keep reminding myself the question is usually about the person asking it, not about me. Still stings for a minute every time.

How do y'all handle the "how long" question? Do you have one short line you reuse, or do you just redirect like I did?

night shift here. The lunch interrogation is brutal. My line: “Doctor’s call. No end date.” Then I ask about their car or lawn. Boring questions kill nosy ones.

I also track non-scale stuff: steps on shift, waist, how I sleep. The scale isn’t the whole story. 31 down is huge.

Don’t write a book report for

lol the mid-bite ambush is wild. my current line is “same as my other prescriptions, until my doctor says otherwise,” then i ask if they’ve seen whatever show.

the thing that actually helped me stop spiraling was tracking non-scale stuff. i have a note called “stairs report” and it went from “oof” to “actually fine” around march.

also did the soda swap: regular -> mini cans -> fizzy water, now i mostly forget it. down 22 since feb. the question still bugs me, but i treat it like someone asking my rent: “enough,” then change subject. what do you say to family? coworkers were easier for me.

I feel this. The question I’ve started asking back: “Are you asking because you’re worried about me or just curious?” It’s a gentle mirror.

My pharmacy tech also mentioned my insurance only approves in chunks, so there’s no clean “done” date anyway. I keep a note on my phone with my non-scale wins—stairs, blood pressure cuff, garden weeds—and reread it before family cookouts.

Curious: has anyone else had a coworker follow up with “but what if you gain it back?” That one stumps me.
