Thinking in years while the kids eat macaroni

I’ve got a 7- and 10-year-old, and 6 p.m. is a small hurricane. Last month I stopped trying to overhaul dinner and made one pantry basket mine: cottage cheese cups, turkey sticks, frozen edamame, tuna pouches.

The kids still graze the carb-y stuff, but I can grab something fast before I become the leftover macaroni. I’m trying to picture this as a long-term setup, not a 12-week project.

Not perfect, but it survives Tuesday. What’s one default you keep in the kitchen when the evening goes sideways?

I run a cafe, so my temptation is a rotating cast of scones and crusts. What helped me steal your idea was making my basket shelf-level, not fridge-door: a little caddy with roasted chickpeas, mini guac cups, and almonds.

The rule is I eat my thing while I’m plating theirs, not after—otherwise I’m a human garbage disposal for uneaten grilled cheese. One tweak: I add a spoon and a tiny bowl next to the caddy, because if I have to hunt for dishes at 6 p.m., I’ll just eat standing over the sink.

Do you keep yours where the kids can reach? Mine would vanish if it was at eye level.
