I thought I had no willpower, but it was really just a scheduling issue

I always assumed I was just a night snacker. Started logging not only what I ate but when, plus hunger 1–10, sleep, protein, and stress.

The pattern was embarrassingly obvious: about 85% of my cravings hit between 9:15 and 10:30pm, almost only on days I skipped lunch or landed under 100g protein. Not a moral failure — an upstream input problem.

So I added a boring 4pm protein anchor and moved my caffeine cutoff to noon. Nighttime urge dropped from nightly to maybe once a week.

Still strange to realize my discipline was mostly logistics wearing a costume. Anyone else find their “weakness” is really just a missing variable?

dude the gaming window is so real. mine was less 9:15 and more “right after i close the lobby” — finish a ranked set and immediately want something sweet/crunchy, even if i wasn’t hungry-hungry.

what helped was treating it like a scheduled thing: protein shake or cottage cheese around 8:45, then seltzer instead of diet soda during late queue. the sweet soda taste was keeping the snack urge alive for me.

now i still get the urge around 11 but it’s way quieter. was your 9:15–10:30 window actual stomach hunger or more the post-match/boredom hand-to-mouth thing?

also did logging sleep show you were just tired and chasing energy?

The 9:15 window rings true — mine was the 20 minutes after the kids finally went down. What actually moved the needle wasn't more discipline, it was pre-deciding: on any day I'm short on protein, I log a 150-cal protein snack at 8:30, so by the time the window hits the decision's already made and I'm not standing in the pantry negotiating with myself.

Curious which lever you pulled first — lunch, the protein number, or dinner timing? For me lunch was the big one. Fixing that alone cut my 9pm cravings by half. The window still shows up, it's just a lot quieter now, which is honestly all I need in maintenance.

I track similarly, and that 9:15–10:30 window jumped out at me. Mild pushback: for me, fixing lunch and protein helped but didn’t fully kill it.

The craving often showed up even on good days if I had no wind-down plan—kids asleep, couch, screen, then kitchen. I started rating hunger right before and again 20 minutes later; if it was 3/10 before and still 3/10 after, I knew it was a cue, not fuel.

Curious: on your higher-protein, non-skipped-lunch days, do you still get a smaller version of that wave? And have you tried shifting some protein to a late-afternoon snack to see if the timing moves?

as a 2am lobby gremlin, the schedule fix for me was admitting i don’t eat at 6 on raid nights. i started pre-logging a 9pm plate — chicken, rice, way too much roasted broccoli — before i sat down.

if i got 40g protein there, the 11pm soda urge baically disappeared. also swapped my afternoon dew for caffeine-free root beer and that weirdly killed the late sweet craving.

did your 9:15 window shift at all on nights you slept like garbage vs decent? that’s the one variable i still can’t figure out.

The skipped-lunch variable is the one I’d isolate: hold dinner and total protein constant, but add a 30g-protein lunch on half your skip days. If the 9:15 hunger score drops only on those days, it’s daytime fuel deficit, not nighttime habit.

Also—did your log separate “craving” from “hunger”? That distinction changed my tracking; my 9pm “8/10” was usually 3/10 hunger plus routine.

The 85% is doing a lot of work, so sanity-check it against your own baseline: a random 75-minute window in a 16-hour waking day should catch ~8%, so 85% is signal, not noise. But mine changed shape when I re-plotted.

Clock time looked locked at 9:15–10:30 until I switched the x-axis to hours-before-bed; then the "window" dissolved into ~2h pre-sleep every night, whether lights-out was 9:45 or 12:30. Cheap test: add one column, bedtime minus craving time, and see if your window survives the re-plot.

Curious whether yours is clock-anchored or sleep-anchored — mine was 90% the latter and it killed my whole schedule theory.

this is so me except my hidden input was caffeine/soda timing. i logged my last diet soda (and whether i was actually thirsty) next to hunger, and the 9:15–10:30 window got way smaller when i swapped the 8pm refill for decaf tea + a big water bottle.

not magic, just fewer fake hunger signals. did you track caffeine or screen-time in that window?

i keep confusing raid boredom with actual hunger, and a 2-min “am i bored or underfed?” check before opening the pantry has been weirdly useful.
