My after-dinner loop has gotten so long now that it is actually longer than my recipes

For what it's worth, the kids are out, and for a while I kept cooking like they were coming back. I’d make a full pan of something, eat standing up, then sit down for the actual meal.

Last spring I started a 12-minute walk after I cleared the table—just to break the loop. Now it’s 30 to 40 minutes, and I plan dinners around one protein and one vegetable instead of a whole production. I’m down 59 pounds over roughly 15 months.

The medication quiets a lot of the food chatter, but it doesn’t fill the after-dinner hour. I still have nights when the empty rooms make me want to snack out of boredom. For those further along, what do you do with that hour?

Maintaining a few years now, and I went through the same nest-empty recalibration. What finally helped was portioning the pan into two containers before I sat down—one for tomorrow’s lunch, one for the freezer—so the extra wasn’t a live option while I ate.

Then I made the walk my podcast time: next episode only if I’m moving. Rainy nights, I do laps up and down the basement stairs.

Do you walk outside, or is yours more of an indoor loop? I’m curious whether your 30–40 minutes still feels like a circuit-breaker or has become something you actually look forward to.

My spreadsheet says your walk is winning.
