Do you take a real off day or just a lighter one?

Saturday I planned a genuine rest day — no after-dinner walk, no dumbbells, no stretching routine — and by 2pm I was pacing the kitchen like the dog waiting for a walk.

I've been doing a 30-minute loop after dinner plus two short strength sessions a week, and my knees had been politely asking for a break. So I gave them one.

Slept nine hours, ate normally, felt oddly guilty about doing nothing, then woke up Sunday with more energy for my usual loop than I've had in a while. So the off day wasn't a hole in the plan, it was part of it.

Now I'm trying to find the right rhythm — one full rest day each week, or two lighter days instead? What does resting actually look like in your routine?

Do you schedule it ahead, or wait until your body sends a memo?

The kitchen pacing is so real 😂 I schedule my rest day now or I just wander.

rest day? Mine's just 'wander the dorm looking for cheap protein' day lol.

Rest days are weirdly harder than workout days for me too. What helped was giving my hands a job instead of my legs — I keep a cheap cross-stitch kit or a 500-piece puzzle on the coffee table.

Sounds grandma-ish, but it scratches the same itch as the after-dinner loop without the knee miles. I also track "rest day steps" and aim for under 3k, which makes it feel like a real boundary instead of just floating.

Did your knees actually thank you the next morning, or was it more of a delayed "oh yeah, that helped" thing? Asking because mine are dramatic and I can never tell.

Nine hours of sleep plus kitchen pacing is not a rest day, that's just a deload with a better mattress. I take one true off day a week — no lifting, no walk, nothing that gets logged.

Rule is I'm allowed to move if I feel like it, it just doesn't count as a session. First two weeks I was insufferable.

Now it's the day I look forward to.

Real question though: did the knees actually feel better Sunday, or just quieter because you'd stopped poking them? Mine usually need two days to give a straight answer.

Ha, the kitchen pacing is so real. Did your knees thank you the next day?

I like that you actually honored your knees rather than doing a token version. One thing that helped me on true rest days was deciding the night before what would fill the usual walk slot — a podcast with tea, a slow grocery run, or an early bath.

Otherwise the hour feels strangely empty. I also track weekly averages instead of daily: steps and strength sessions.

One zero day barely shifts the weekly number if the rest of the week is steady. Curious — did the nine hours of sleep change how your knees felt the next morning, or was it more of a mood reset?

The kitchen pacing is painfully relatable—my “rest” days just become snack patrol 😂

I’ve noticed my 2pm pacing is usually under-stimulation, not actual energy. On true off days I now give myself one “brain rest” task—standing at
