What I eat before lifting when appetite is low

four lifting days/week, 45–60 min, mostly compounds. Since starting a GLP-1, appetite is lowest in the morning, so I was training underfueled and calling it discipline. RPE drifted up, bar speed got ugly, and afternoon energy was flat.

What helped: a small pre-session carb hit 60–90 min out—usually 30g oats plus a scoop of whey—then electrolytes in 750 mL water during. If I wait until after, the session is already a write-off. Sleep under 6.5h makes the whole thing feel twice as heavy.

I’m not chasing stimulants. I just want enough substrate to finish sets without feeling drained. For those training on a deficit: do you front-load carbs, use intra-workout carbs, or just accept lower work capacity? Data over vibes—what’s actually moved the needle?

The “underfueled = discipline” trap got me too—a tiny carb bite before lifting made sessions feel human again.

Honestly, I see the pre-lift carb hit a little differently. For me, eating 60–90 min out made me burpy and slow once my appetite got weird. Banking carbs the night before—rice or potato at supper—then just coffee, salt, and water on the drive helped way more.

First-set RPE dropped and bar speed stopped looking like a dying diesel. I track supper carbs, sleep, and first-set RPE in my notes. My local pharmacy tech who lifts said she des the same, though everybody’s guts differ.

Wish insurance covered a sports dietitian, but that’s another thread. Anyone else do better with evening carbs than a morning bite?

I found the bigger lever wasn’t just the pre-lift bite. My appetite was low all day, so my weekly carbs were trash and I kept blaming the session.

Now I track total carbs vs RPE and bar speed. On low-appetite days I sip a little carb drink through warm-up instead of forcing a solid meal, then get a real mixed meal in within ~90 min after.

Same total protein and sleep, way better top sets, and my afternoon slump disappeared. Might be worth checking your weekly carb average, not just the 60–90 min window.

Anyone else notice post-lift refuel matters more than the pre when appetite is low?

Sorry to hijack — quick side q: does anyone else’s appetite go missing after a hard session too, not just before? Looping back: for me the pre-lift bite was only half the fix.

The bigger tell was dinner the night before—if I under-ate protein/carbs then, my first working set felt heavy no matter what I had 60–90 min out. I started logging dinner vs. next-morning first-set RPE/bar

Same—underfueled lifting just reads as fake discipline; a small carb snack changed my session quality.

New here too—this makes me feel less alone about low morning appetite, thak you for sharing!
