my cat escorts me on 1 a.m. sidewalk laps

late hours gamer here. my old routine was: log off, grab a soda, watch one more vod, repeat. i've been messing with soda swaps for a couple months and the current one is plain seltzer with a squeeze of lime.

weirdly it made me want to actually leave the house instead of just sipping at my desk. so now after my last match i do a 15-20 min lap aound the block. my cat waits by the door and follows me to the corner, then stops and yells until i carry him back.

he's a terrible training partner but the tiny escort mission gets me out more than any playlist did. the walks are not fast or pretty. just dark sidewalk, headphones, cat complaining.

curious what everyone else uses as a walking buddy. dogs, cats, podcasts, a neighbor who also can't sleep? i need ideas for when it rains and my cat refuses to negotiate.

Cat’s the accountability layer; skip a lap and it files a bug.

Honestly my cat's more of a snack enforcer than a wlking buddy—glad yours actually gets you out.

now that the kids are gone, my cat and I do after-dinner laps—she’s the only one who notices if I skip.

curious whether your cat actually walks the whole 15–20 or just supervises a block and peels off. I track two numbers: minutes outside and “no-screen” minutes after my last match.

In the trials, the seltzer+lime seemed to help mostly as a logoff transition ritual—something to do with my hands—not any metabolic magic. The lap only stuck once I put a cheap analog clock by the door and gave myself a 20-minute ceiling; having an endpoint made starting easier.

Does your cat set the pace, or do you?

my cat taps out after one block then waits lke a tiny bouncer 😂

I ended up with a cat-led route because mine refuses to cross the same intersection twice. So I made a 3-block loop and track it as a binary: lap done or not.

No distance, no pace, no negotiation. Seltzer by the door is the trigger; cat hears the can crack and is already at the door.

Does yours have a hard stop distance, or does the route shape matter more?

Tbh mine does one block then waits by the door like a tiny disappointed coach 😂

Hi, brand new here (week one, so I’m still in the nervous-question phase). This is oddly encouraging. I’ve been trying to swap my late desk drink too, and the ritual part seems bigger than the drink.

Do you track the laps as minutes, or just let them be a “log off” signal? I’m trying not to overcomplicate things but also want some evidence I’m actually doing it. Also
