Scale stuck 5 weeks but waist and resting HR improved?

I'm 14 weeks into a slow cut, down 18 lbs from 230 to 212. The last 5 weeks the scale has bounced between 212 and 214, but my waist is down another 2 inches and my resting heart rate went from 72 to 64.

Fasting glucose also dropped from 101 to 92 at my last check. I'm lifting 3x/week and walking 8k steps most days.

Is this a real plateau or just body comp changing under the scale?

Curious if anyone saw labs and measurements improve while weight stalled.

Waist down 2 inches while scale flat for 5 weeks is the real win. My RHR dropped before the scale ever moved.

Did you change sodium or carbs around week 9? A whoosh can hide water for ages. Mine sat still 18 days then dropped 3 lbs overnight.

The fasting glucose drop from 101 to 92 stands out. Was that a home meter or lab draw? Mine lagged the scale by a month.

Interesting, my RHR went up in a deficit until I added daily walking. How many steps were you doing before 8k?

The lifting angle matters. If you're new to 3x/week, water retention in repair can mask fat loss. Tape beats scale during that.

Five weeks is long enough that I'd check two things: average weekly intake versus four weeks ago, and whether training volume jumped. If waist is still shrinking, you're likely recomposing.

If waist and scale are both flat, it's a true plateau. The RHR and glucose improvements suggest the habits are working even if weight isn't.

I'd also look at sleep and stress, since both can hide fat loss on the scale for a few weeks. What does your weekly average look like compared to week five? And has your lifting load gone up?

Five weeks isn't a true plateau, I'd push back on that. Had a six-week stretch parked right at 178 while lifting and keeping creatine in the rotation. Waist still dropped 1.5 inches over that window, and then the scale finally caught up.

Creatine water weight is a real thing, good shout. Any new supplements in the mix lately, or a jump in carbs? Either one can park 2-3 lbs of water on the scale and make the number look worse than it actually is.

Not creatine for me, but stress. Sleep got bad during a work crunch, RHR climbed 5 bpm, scale froze too. When sleep came back, whoosh.

The heart rate thing isn't backwrads. Mine went from 74 to 66 over four months while scale only moved 9 lbs.

If waist, glucose, and RHR are trending right, I'd keep going and maybe compare monthly averages instead of daily weights. A maintenance week is what finally moved mine after six flat weeks, but that's just my experience.

Waist down 2 inches with a flat scale is the dream trade, honestly.

My scale only moves after two solid sleep nights, not the gym.

Five weeks at 212-214 with a 2-inch waist drop and RHR down 8 bpm isn't a plateau, it's a recomp phase. I'd stop judging by single mornings and compare 7-day averages: a 2-lb daily swing from sodium, carbs, or a hard lift is normal.

When I was cutting from 205 to 190, the scale sat at 198 for nearly six weeks, then dropped 3 lbs in four days after my waist had already moved. If your lifts are holding or climbing and steps are steady at 8k, I'd keep food the same another 2-3 weeks before changing anything.

The glucose and resting HR improvements are better health markers than the scale right now.

Betting it's water and food volume masking fat loss, not a true plateau. I had a five-week flatline at 212 too and found my weekends were adding 3,500-4,500 extra calories from restaurant meals and drinks, even though weekdays were tight.

I didn't change workouts; I just pre-logged Saturday, kept protein around 130-150g, and swapped the second drink for sparkling water. The scale dropped 2.5 lbs over the next 10 days.

Also take a mirror pic every two weeks in the same spot because my brain missed the waist change until I compared photos. If your clothes fit looser and recovery is better, you're winning.

I'd give it another 3 weeks before cutting calories.

I had a similar weird reset at week 12: scale sat at 198-200 for 26 days while my 34-inch jeans went from 'button with prayer' to 'need a belt,' and my top squat set actually felt easier. The unexpected part was that adding ~200 calories, mostly around training, broke the stall and dropped me 3 lbs in 8 days.

Not saying that's your fix, but if lifts are holding and clothes keep loosening, I'd track a 10-day average and same-morning waist instead of daily weight. Are you measuring waist at the same time and spot every time? That made a huge difference for me.

Oddly, what moved my 5-week flat scale was a 15-minute walk after dinner, not more gym volume. I was hitting 8k but all before lunch. Adding 2k after dinner three nights a week changed my morning weigh-ins within 10 days.

Downside: it made me hungrier, so I had to pre-log a yogurt or I’d snack the whole evening. Worth trying if your steps are front-loaded.

Scale’s been stuck so long I’m starting to think it’s on payroll from my old pants.

Week 17 I did a 12-day maintenance break after a 6-week flat scale, and it felt counterintuitive as hell. Weight popped up 3 lbs by day 4, then dropped 5 by day 14. I wasn’t tracking anything different except eating more consistently on weekends.

Could be coincidence, but if you’ve been in a deficit since week 1, a short break might tell you more than another 5 weeks of white-knuckling.

Honestly 5 weeks flat with a 2 inch waist drop is the most confusing plateau I've ever heard of.

I weigh daily but only look at the 7 day average, because one salty dinner can slap 3 lbs on me overnight and it's gone by Wednesday. Mine averaged out to 0.3 lbs a week for 6 weeks during one stretch. Your glucose and resting HR are the real scoreboard here.
