Stuck at 47s for 8 weeks—what finally broke your cube plateau?

I’ve been solving 3x3 for about five months. In January I averaged 52s, then hit a wall: 47.3s average over 8 weeks, best single 39.8. I do 30 solves most nights, sometimes 50 on weekends. My lookahead is trash, but timed drills make me slower.

Is this just a plateau where I should stop timing for a bit, or is there a specific routine that helped you push through? I’m especially curious about people who broke 40s without learning full CFOP.

Plateaus are normal. I sat at 45s for two months, then did a week of untimed slow solves. Came back and dropped to 41 average. Timer panic is real.

Timer panic is my problem too. Log solves?

I broke 40 after learning full PLL, but my F2L actually got worse for a month. Weirdly, 2-look OLL was fine. Maybe your 47s wall is really an F2L pause problem?

F2L pause problem sounds likely. Try slow solves with a metronome at 60 bpm. One turn per beat, no timer. It feels dumb for a week then clicks.

Metronome drills helped me more than 30 timed solves a night. Quality over volume. Also check your cross: if it takes more than 8 moves, that's leaking seconds.

I’m the odd one: my plateau was sleep and setup, not algorithms. I was doing 50 solves at midnight, averaging 48. When I moved practice to 20 focused solves after coffee, my average came down to 43 in three weeks.

I also switched to a cube with weaker magnets and my turning got smoother. I stopped chasing PBs for two weeks too, and that alone killed a lot of the anxiety.

Not saying gear fixes everything, but if your 47.3 average comes from late-night grinding, try one week of shorter morning sessions and see if the timer panic fades.

Morning workouts, huh? Might have to try that. Late-night reps always turn into rage reps for me.

Color neutrality knocked me from 46 to 42 in about a month. It’s annoying at first, but picking the easiest cross instead of always white gave me way better lookahead.

Broke my 47-second wall by cutting solves, not adding them—turned out my 30-a-night habit was just practicing fatigue. I was doing 30 solves at 11pm after work, averaging 47.1, and my F2L pauses were almost entirely when I was tired or stressed.

Switched to 15 solves at lunch after a real break, no timer, and after 12 days my average dropped to 42.3 with a 38.9 single; the weird part is my lookahead got better because I wasn't panicking about the clock. I also tracked it for two weeks and my best sessions were always after 7+ hours sleep, worst were after weekend 50-solve marathons where I'd tank after solve 20.

If you're stuck at 47, try capping at 20 qulity solves and stopping when you make two dumb mistakes in a row, then tell me what time of day you usually cube—I bet that's more of a factor than any new alg.

I’m in the regain-and-restart club, so I feel this. For cubing, what finally moved me off 46s was a 5-minute metronome block before timed solves: one solve at a time, click every 1.5

New here too—untimed slow solves weirdly helped my lookahead more than drills. You’ll get there!

Oof, same wall. Slowing down and fewer solves helped me more than grinding.

Felt this. I dropped my nightly solve count and just did chill untimed solves—lookahead finally had room to breathe.

New here too, but 47s is my dream—rooting for you! Maybe try a few slow untmed solves?

Same wall here—dropped timed soles for a week and just played, came back smoother. You’ll get it.

Felt this! Slowing down and doing untimed lookahead walks broke my wall—less grind, more chill.

Not a speedcuber, just a pharmacy tech who cubes between prior-auth hold music, but what broke my 48 wall was 10 slow solves with a metronome at 60 bpm—one turn per beat, no exceptions. Felt ridiculous, but it exposed where I panic-turn instead of looking ahead.

I also filmed one average a week and counted pauses over 1 second in F2L. Went 47 to 43 in about three weeks. Have you tried logging a “pause count” instead of just times? That was the missing stat for me.

Fellow regainer here—stopping the timer and doing slow solves broke my cube wall. Less volume, more brething room.

Hi, I’m brand new here and only a week in, so apologies if this is obvious. I’m not a fast cuber, but my plateau in another habit broke when I stopped tracking averages and tracked one process cue: pauses over 1 second.

I filmed one solve, counted them, and almost all were right after cross. So I did 15 minutes of metronome solves—60 bpm, one turn per beat, no timer. Weirdly, that dropped my times more than extra timed solves. Have you tried isolating just cross-to-first-pair? That’s where mine hid.
