New here and already thinking about the very long road

Tbh hi all, I’m brand new—only a few days in—and I’m trying not to flood the forum with tiny questions. This one keeps circling: for those who’ve been doing this for a while, did you start out thinking it would be a permanent part of your routine, or more of a temporary reset?

I’m 38 and would like to lose about 40 pounds, but the bigger unknown for me is the after part. I don’t mean to ask for medical advice at all; I’m just curious how people mentally frame the long term without getting overwhelmed.

Did anything help you stop projecting five years out and just handle this week? Thank you for reading—I’m nervous to post.

For me it’s been more of a permanent travel buddy than a temporary reset—at least for now. I’m in hotels/airports most weeks and stopped pretending I’ll eat perfectly.

My road kit: shaker bottle, protein powder packets, jerky, nuts, electrolyte stick, reusable water bottle. Hotel breakfast = eggs + fruit + coffee, then I walk the terminal instead of parking at the gate.

I don’t track every bite, just protein and water. Mindset shift: not “white-knuckling until I’m done,” but “what does maintenance look like at 30,000 feet?” Sharp question: what’s your first big trip while on this?

Planning that might tell you whether you see it as temporary or a long-haul copilot.

I see it a bit differently: I don’t think it has to be “permanent vs temporary” as a big identity decision. For me it’s more like brushing my teeth—daily weigh-in, 7-day trend line, protein at breakfast, a walk after dinner.

Scale spikes are noise; the trend is the signal. I’d rather build habits I can keep at goal than decide today whether this is forever.

For 40 lbs, I’d chunk it into 10-lb phases and ask what I’d keep at maintenance. Sharp follow-up: which habit feels least like punishment for you?

That’s usually the one that sticks.
