The snack drawer is running my whole evening now

Two kids, sports nights, and a husband who works late. Dinner is more of a relay than a sit-down. I keep a drawer with pre-portioned nuts, turkey sticks, string cheese, and cut fruit.

Last Tuesday I caught myself grazing from it while packing lunches, then again while cleaning up. Not a binge, just a bunch of little hand-to-mouth moments that never hit a plate. I started putting a sticky note on the drawer that says "plate first." Sounds dumb, but it slowed me down.

My weight is trending down slowly, maybe half a pound a week, and I think this one habit is a chunk of it. For those with chaotic kitchens: do you keep a snack drawer at all, or did you have to move it out of reach?

Oof, the packing-lunch graze is so real. One thing that helped me: I made the drawer boring to open.

I moved the lunchbox stuff to a different counter and put a sticky note on the drawer that says “plate it or skip it.” If I actually want something, I put it on a little plate, sit down, and drink a seltzer first. Half the time it was the motion, not hunger.

I also ask myself, “Am I packing, cleaning, or eating?” If it’s not eating, hands off. What time does it usually start for you—right at the after-school rush, or once the kitchen finally gets quiet?

The relay-dinner thing is what gets me—my hands want a job while I’m waiting on the next kid. What helped was a “packing drink” rule: big glass of ice water or decaf tea on the counter while I pack lunches, and if I want a snack it has to go on a plate at the table.

Sounds fussy, but it killed most of my drive-by nibbles. I also moved the string cheese to the back of the fridge so it’s not a one-second grab.

Do you notice it’s worse while packing or while cleaning up? I’m curious if it’s the standing still

hi, I’m brand new here (week one, nervous!) and this is exactly the kind of evening I’m worried about. One tiny thing that’s helped me before: I keep a tall glass of ice water with a straw on the counter and sip it while I pack lunches/clean up—it gives my hands and mouth something to do.

Do you think it’s actual hunger at that point, or more the motion/habit? Not judging at all, jst trying to figure out my own patterns.
