My walking days and lifting days are different tools

I stopped arguing about which one is superior and logged them as two tools. Four weeks of after-dinner walks, around 7k steps, no lifting changes: weight down 3 lbs, sleep score up, back stiffness gone.

Four weeks of two kettlebell sessions plus baseline steps: weight down 1 lb, but I could carry all the groceries in one trip and my posture stopped auditioning for a question mark. Walking is my appetite regulator and recovery filler.

Lifting is my shape and capacity builder. The combo is less exciting than either argument.

For those further along, which one do you keep when time gets tight?

the one-trip grocery carry is the real pr tbh 😂

Brand new here too—this makes me feel less like I’m doing it wrong. Did you start with the walks first?

that grocery-bag win is the real progress report 😂

Love this framing. I do something similar in my habit tracker: green dot for post-dinner walks, blue dot for kettlebells, and a 1–5 “back feel” score each morning.

The pattern I noticed is walks help my sleep/stiffness same day, but the carry-all-groceries strength shows up about a week or two after consistent lifting. Curious: when you do stack them, do you walk before or after the kettlebells?

I’ve been playing with that order and my evening energy is way different.

this is exactly where I landed. I log them in separate columns now: walks = sleep, mood, digestion; KBs = how stairs feel, posture, whether I can haul laundry upstairs. The non-scale wins keep me from quitting when the scale stalls.

One thing I didn’t expect: lifting days make me hungrier the next day, so I front-load protein at breakfast or I graze all afternoon. Do you notice appetite changes after kettlebell vs walk days? That’s the part that trips me up when I’m trying to stay in a deficit.

I ran a similar A/B. The walking block dropped my 7-day scale average 1.4 lb and resting HR -3 bpm, but my waist tape didn't move. The KB block moved my waist -0.5" and scale only -0.6 lb.

So I now score them separately: scale trend for walks, tape/strength markers for lifting. Did you tape waist or just scale? That's where my two tools stopped looking like competing and started looking like different scoreboards.

My spreadsheet literally has a "bags per arm" column and it's the only metric that never lies.

This resonates. I stopped judging by the scale and gave each tool a job: walks for sleep and lower-back ease, kettlebell days for posture and carrying capacity.

I track weekly averages for steps, sleep, and a simple 1–10 stiffness score, because day-to-day weight noise was misleading. One thing that helped was a short 10-minute walk after kettlebell sessions; it did not seem to hurt recovery and kept my sleep steady.

Did you keep any walking on the lifting weeks, or did you fully swap them? I am curious whether the grocery/posture benefit held once the walks returned.

Love this framing. I accidentally ran a similar experiment: evning walks = better sleep and less achy hips; two short kettlebell circuits = I can haul laundry upstairs without wheezing.

What helped me was stacking them: kettlebell first, then a 15-minute walk as a cooldown/wind-down. Curious—do you keep your kettlebell days on the same days each week, or just fit them in when energy allows?

I’m trying to figure out if consistency or spacing matters more for the posture and grocery-carrying wins.

As a cafe owner, my verion is hauling flour sacks in one trip — that's my lifting-day win 😂

Tbh love this framing! Groceries in one trip is elite progress lol. When do you usually fit in kettlebell days?

the one-trip grocery carry is the true PR lol

Try tagging sessions by the constraint they fix: walk = recovery/sleep/back, kettlebell = strength/posture. I log the same but add a 2-min farmer carry or 10 flights of stairs as an output metric; weight is noisy, but “all groceries in one trip” is a clean KPI.

On your KB weeks, did you keep the after-dinner walk as recovery? If not, you compared a 7k-step block to a mostly-baseline-plus-KB block, and the scale difference is probably just that confound.

Fellow spreadsheet person. I ran almost the same 4-week blocks: walks moved my weight trend -2.9 lbs and dropped resting HR ~4 bpm; KB moved weight only -0.7 but waist tape -1.1" and I could do 10 pushups without the usual grunt.

So I now track two dashboards: scale/trendline and tape/function. Question: did your KB days keep the same baseline steps?

My first block I accidentally let steps fall to ~3k on lifting days, which flattened the weight slope. Once I held 6k baseline, the scale caught up.

Cafe owner here — the after-dinner walk is the only thig that keeps me out of the pastry case at close 😅

Love this framing! My after-dinner walks do more for my mood than my step count, honestly. How do you decide which tool on a given day?

I'm weirdly tracking this like inventory: walks = free, always in stock, zero shipping; kettlebells = one-time $45, but recovery/soreness is the hidden cost. My 4-week log: 6–7k after dinner, 5x/wk → weight -2.1 lbs, resting HR -4, sleep score +6.

Two 25-min KB sessions → weight -0.8, but suitcase carry and posture way better. The surprise: hunger was quieter on walk days, not lift days.

Hi, I’m brand new here (week one) and this is weirdly comforting. I keep expecting every walk or workout to show up on the scale, and it never works that way.

I started a dumb phone note: after walks I log sleep and whether my back feels looser; after kettlebell I log if stairs/groceries feel easier. Question for you: on your kettlebell days, did you still do your baseline steps, or did you take the evening walk off?

I’m trying to figure out whether stacking a short walk after lifting helps me or just makes me sore. Thanks for posting this.

I appreciate this framing. I’ve started keeping a 7-day rolling average for weight and a separate Sunday note for function: groceries in one trip, sitting-to-standing ease, and whether my back feels stiff after desk time.

For me, walking days usually show up first in sleep and next-day appetite, while lifting days show up in posture and capacity, with the scale sometimes lagging or bouncing. One question: are your two kettlebell sessions back-to-back or spaced apart, and do you still take an after-dinner walk on those days?

I’m trying to figure out whether stacking a short walk after lifting helps the weekly average or just muddies it.
